Part of the cockroach order Blattodea, termites are eusocial (highly organised) insects. As such, they live in colonies, which number from several hundred to several million individuals. Similar to ants, bees and wasps, termites divide labour among castes, such as: nymphs (semi-mature young), workers, soldiers, reproductive males and females, as well as the queen. Communicating through signals, termite colonies use decentralised, self-organised behaviour guided by swarm intelligence to obtain food and enter environments a single termite could not enter alone.
The word “termite” originates from the Latin word “termes” (woodworm, white ant), and altered by the Latin term “terere” (rub, wear, erode). Termites are considered hidden invaders; and for good reason. While difficult for the untrained eye to detect, termites often leave “calling cards”, indicating they have taken up residence in your home:
- Wings on windowsills (indicate flying termites)
- Unexplained piles of a coarse, grain-like substance sifting out of wooden structures e.g. walls, skirting boards, etc. (termite leavings).
- Obvious wood damage.
- Wood with a honeycomb pattern on the inside or which has been hollowed out
You can check whether wood is hollow by probing it with a knife or flat-bed screwdriver. Severely damaged wood may sound hollow when tapped. If you have found a termite infestation in your home, don’t fret – at POM we offer several treatment options. Ultimately, the treatment option chosen will depend on the location and severity of the infestation, the species of termite and the nature of the structure (e.g. single or double storey house, etc). We operate primarily in Tweed Heads or on the Gold Coast and are aware of all the issues with this specific area.
We understand that each termite population is unique therefore, each infestation is different.
